Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff Scheme
To combat climate change and promote a greener future, starting October 1, 2018 (CLP Power) / January 1, 2019 (HK Electric), solar power panel owners can sell the electricity they produce to the two power companies at HK$2.50 to HK$4 per kilowatt-hour (depending on the scale of generation) via the Feed-in Tariff Scheme. This price is significantly higher than the current electricity price for HK$1 to HK$1.50 per kilowatt-hour.
This program runs for 15 years, until 2033. The solar power system investment payback period is generally 3-5 years. This allows owners to earn stable, high feed-in tariff for the next 10-12 years, and then continue to earn regular electricity rates thereafter.

HK Electric announcement:
The feed‑in tariff will be divided into three tiers according to the system’s generation capacity:
Renewable energy system generation capacity | Feed‑in tariff (per kWh)^ |
|---|---|
≤ 10kWh | HKD$ 4 |
10kWh to ≤ 200kWh | HKD$ 3 |
200kWh to ≤ 1MW | HKD$ 2.5 |
^The above feed‑in tariffs take effect from 27 April 2022 and will be subject to periodic review.
